You can help 50,000 families become self-sufficient and financially stable with help from United Way simply by voting for the micro lending project, one of the Top 50 project ideas in the "The Members Project" from American Express. American Express, one of United Way's National Corporate Leadership partners, will donate $1 for each card member that registers with a minimum of $1 million and a maximum of $5 million for the winning idea.

We believe that all families and individuals, no matter where on earth, should be given the tools and opportunities to create stability for themselves. To this end, we believe that micro-credit programs and micro-lending are proven and innovative interventions to help support families and individuals to improve their quality of life.

A micro loan as small as $57 allows a family to buy a cow, and have milk to drink and sell. The loan is paid back, 97% of the time, and the profits are used to pay school fees. A second loan pays for improvements to the shop on the side of the family's small, primitive living quarters. Again, sales improve, the loan is paid back, the family's standard of living improves. This virtuous cycle has proven itself around the world.
